Northern University was founded in 1996
The University has initially adopted a unique mission to organize higher education of Armenian immigrated youth, from former Soviet Republics, particularly Russia, in the homeland (this is how comes the name ''Northern”).

Northern University first accreditation - N013, has received by RA Ministry of Education and Science, in 2001.
In 2015, the National Center for Professional Education Quality Assurance (ANQA) has granted institutional accreditation for 2 years (conditional).
In 2018, has been re-accredited for a four-year term by the National Center for Professional Education Quality Assurance (ANQA).
The primary purpose of state accreditation is to assure educational institutions, students, families, employers, and interested public that the institution operates with a high level of quality in education and is recognized by the Government. Accreditation is a process by which educational institutions and academic programmes are recognized for their performance, integrity, and quality that entitles them to the confidence of the educational community and the public. Accreditation is granted for a certain period and guarantees that the institution or academic programme has the necessary capacity to provide education for a definite time span. Accreditation entails that the institution maintains the standards that endow its graduates to gain admission to other reputable institutions of higher learning or to achieve credentials for professional practice.
The Northern University provides its students, post-graduate students exclusively state diploma.
The University has a three-cycle system of higher education: Bachelor's degree, Master’s degree and Post-graduate education.
The education of Northern University Bachelor's and Master's degree programs is implemented on the following specializations:
- Software engineering
- Accounting and taxation
- General Pedagogy
- Preschool Pedagogy
- Specialized Pedagogy
- Foreign Language and Literature
- Enterprise Economics and Management (according branches)
- Informatics (Computer Sciences)
Post-graduate professional education is carried out on the following specializations of the Academic Degree Award nomination of the Republic of Armenia:
- Finance, Accounting
- Armenian Classical Literature
- Judical Law
The University organizes the education of foreign citizens in the following specialties:

There is also a high school and a medical college in the University.
The Northern University also has its Alaverdi “Tumanyan” branch, where introduced new technologies has created new opportunities for students to study distance learning courses.
The branch university, in full-time/part-time Bachelor’s Degree program implements education in following academic programs:

- General Pedagogy (Primary Pedagogy and Methodology)
- Preschool Pedagogy (Preschool Pedagogy and Methodology).

The University has a library, a reading room, computer classrooms equipped with internet access, educational laboratories. At the University operates its activities: Student Council, Student Scientific Company, Legal Clinic, Laboratory of Criminalistics.
The University’s academic staff cinsists of well-know specialist, lecturers with scientific degree and title.
